Interview with Sharon Hinck

Captain’s Log, Stardate 06.05.2006

I am honored and tickled pink to have my good friend and writing mentor Sharon Hinck with me today! Sharon's totally cool, besides the fact that she somehow thinks I'm a nice person. :)

Sharon's new mom-lit novel is THE SECRET LIFE OF BECKY MILLER!

Faster than a speeding minivan, able to leap piles of laundry in a single bound. It’s a bird, it’s a plane. It’s Supermom!

Move over, Walter Mitty. Here comes Becky Miller. A young mother with grandiose daydreams and a longing to do “Big Things for God” searches for direction amid the chaos of daily life and the disappointment of failed opportunities.

Becky’s rich fantasy life helps her cope with the pressure to be a Wonderful Wife and Marvelous Mom. But she keeps hearing the tape play:

“Your mission, should you choose to accept it: support your husband when he loses his job, nurture an eccentric circle of friends, raise perfect Christian children, live a life full of grand Purpose, all while standing on your head and whistling Dixie. Your fantasy will self-destruct in five seconds.”

And now, Camy puts Sharon on the hotseat!

Hi Sharon. You look remarkably well considering you were just strangled with your heroine Becky's red cape at Mount Hermon conference in April. Come to think of it, I look pretty good after rising from my wasabi-poisoned death. You'd probably be interested to know that you were chosen as Mildred/Brandilyn's fourth victim because I mentioned your name, which was after you'd gone to bed. What are your thoughts on the afterlife?

Pshaw. Surely you didn’t think I’d let some serial killer end my writing career that easily, did you? I feigned death as a ruse...using the Tibetan techniques I learned during one of my missions to Nepal during my C.I.A. days. (Ooops, I’m not supposed to talk about that—top secret and all).

What inspired THE SECRET LIFE OF BECKY MILLER? Did you have to go undercover and spy on overachieving Christian mothers in their natural environment?

Absolutely. I infiltrated home Bible study groups, church Mom’s groups, and even individual homes and recorded my observations and then analyzed the data. Apparently, Christian women feel a huge responsibility to do everything, do it well, AND save the world while they’re at it. They get rather cranky when they don’t measure up to their own expectations. I was glad for my Kevlar vest. Exhausted and overwhelmed Supermoms are scary!

You once had a Christian dance company. Do you think any of your dance experience will make it into a novel? And if so, will you name your character Camy if, oh, say, a dozen pounds of chocolate showed up at your door?

Hey, twinkle-toes. Everyone knows you’re graceful. If I had a ballerina named Camy, readers would think I was writing nonfiction and I’m determined to stick with fiction. BUT the chocolates are still a good idea.

Who are your favorite authors?

Ak! I hate that question, because it’s like trying to decide who to invite to a wedding. You don’t want to forget anyone, and the list gets longer and longer and longer. I read lots of ABA fiction (Jasper Fforde, Jeanne Ray, Mark Dunn, Diana Gabaldon, Sharyn McCrumb, Leif Enger, Sue Monk Kidd, Jill Churchill, L.M. Montgomery ...everyone knows her for Anne of Green Gables, but “The Blue Castle” is an under-discovered gem...and another GREAT find is Carl Sandburg’s Rootabaga Stories) I’m all over the board. My book shelves have multiple-personality disorder. Classics, Sci-fi, fantasy, chick-lit, mystery, women’s fiction, suspense, literary.

Then come the PILES of wonderful books by Christian authors – fiction and non-fiction. For years I’ve loved everything by Davis Bunn (especially when he was genre-hopping all over the place). I like to think I loved C.S. Lewis before it became trendy (Perelandra is my favorite fiction work of his). Bonhoeffer, Richard Foster, Calvin Miller sit side-by-side with authors Patti Hill (LOVE her and just discovered her), Karen Hancock, Roxanne Henke, John Olson, Randy ingermanson, Francine Rivers, Lynn Austin, Ted Dekker, Nancy Moser, Sharon Dunn, Jan Karon. This is NOT a complete list (okay, now I know I’m hurting SOMEONE’s feelings by not mentioning them. AK! I’ll get you for this, Camy!). Yes, I’m geeky enough to sometimes read Shakespeare just for the fun of it. Jack London’s “Sea Wolf” still resonates with me 30 years later. But I also enjoy the “snack food” of writing – like Dorothy Gilman’s “Mrs. Pollifax” books. I read best sellers which I sometimes love and sometimes hate. A few I loved were “The Strange Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime” and “The Life of Pi.”

Just thinking over some of my reading journey in the past forty years makes me feel warm and tingly. Generally, I’ll stumble across an author I love and then devour everything by that author. I remember a summer of Tolkien, a summer of Anne McCaffrey, a year of Twain (Connecticut Yankee still makes me cry)

Finish this phrase: Writing a novel is...

an adventure full of exciting battles, dangerous journeys, dead-ends, overwhelming obstacles, precious comrades, and a glorious quest.

Do you have a favorite scripture verse for your writing?

II Corinthians 4:7... “We have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us.” I’m a cracked, dented, leaky clay pot. I want to be glorious, beautiful, flawless. I’m not. And God is showing me all the time that the places where I’m broken are where His grace leaks out...Those are the places I can be a blessing. In my weakness and honesty.

What is your favorite ethnic food, and what special dish will you cook for me when I come visit you someday soon?

You’ve GOTTA try my Granny’s Russian meatballs with sour cream gravy. And her meatball and potato soup that is served with pickles and sour cream (it’s the BEST).

If you were a zoo animal, what would you be and why?

Camy, are you having delusions of being Barbara Walters, here? Next you’ll ask me what kind of tree I’d be.

If I were a zoo animal, I’d be an ESCAPING zoo animal.

Do you have any favorite TV shows BESIDES Gilmore Girls?

Okay, this is a dangerous question. I SO want to claim I only watch nature documentaries and religious programs at odd hours. But I guess I’ll be honest. I ADORE House. (I know, I know. Lots of inappropriate content...but SUCH terrific character study...and some surprisingly heartfelt discussions on issues of faith). Law and Order (crime dramas are fun...but also there is some strong well-balanced writing around ethical questions and again, matters of faith are often addresses from more than just a “Christians are stupid” angle.). 24 (totally my husband’s fault for getting me hooked). Lost (totally my daughter’s fault). Prison Break (totally my son’s fault). Extreme Makeover Home Edition is a joyous experience to watch. I catch some of the other reality shows when I can. I first watched Survivor because I’ve always loved books about being stranded on an island...but it turned out to be less about surviving elements and more about interacting with others, and sometimes the interactions get so nasty, it’s not fun to watch. My husband and I enjoy Amazing Race, and one year for our anniversary I set up an “Amazing Race” trip for the two of us complete with envelopes and detours and a pit stop.

Thanks for the interview! Any parting words?

I MUST tell everyone what a super encourager and honest critique-buddy you’ve been over the years. Of course I’ll never be HALF as hip as you are, but I’ve been so blessed by our friendship and it’s strengthened my life as a writer.

Also, everyone is invited to pop over to my website. I have a fun “Cosmo-style” quiz to help you find out which of Becky Miller’s friends you are most like, and lots of other fun stuff to explore. www.sharonhinck.com. Thanks for inviting me to your awesome blog!

Hugs, Sharon

Camy here: Aw, thanks, Sharon!

I’m so excited because my January Love Inspired Suspense, Narrow Escape , is now available! Here’s the back cover blurb: KIDNAPPED IN BROAD DAYLIGHT Arissa Tiong and her three-year-old niece are snatched off the street by members of a notorious drug gang. Having lost her police officer brother to a drug bust gone bad, Arissa knows the danger she's in. But she has no idea why they want her. Desperate to protect the little girl, Arissa escapes and runs straight to Nathan Fischer. She knows the handsome, weary former narcotics cop hasn't told her everything about the night that ended her brother's life and Nathan's career. But he's all that stands between her and dangerous thugs who are after something she doesn't even know she has. This is the 4th book in my Sonoma series , but each book is stand-alone. The hero is Nathan Fischer, who had a minor role in the 3rd book, Stalker in the Shadows . To celebrate, I’m giving away 10 copies of Narrow Escape ! Her

I sold to Steeple Hill!

Captain's Log, Supplemental Remember that romantic suspense proposal I blogged about earlier? Well, it just sold to Steeple Hill’s Love Inspired Suspense line! I am so jazzed! I am beyond jazzed! The story’s working title is Sinister Spa The story's title is Deadly Intent and here’s a blurb (but it’s probably not what will appear on the back of the book): Massage therapist Naomi Grant could use a massage herself. With her father at home recovering from a stroke, Naomi is put in charge of the family’s elite day spa in Sonoma county. The new responsibilities sit awkwardly on her shoulders, and things only get worse when handsome Dr. Devon Knightley breezes into the spa, demanding to see one of the female clients. And the woman is found dead in Naomi’s massage room. Suddenly, Naomi is a suspect and her family’s spa is shut down. How could God let this awful thing happen? Devon only needed to see his ex-wife about a family necklace she still hadn’t returned, but when she dies and

No Cold Bums toilet seat cover

Captain's Log, Stardate 08.22.2008 I actually wrote out my pattern! I was getting a lot of hits on my infamous toilet seat cover , and I wanted to make a new one with “improvements,” so I paid attention and wrote things down as I made the new one. This was originally based off the Potty Mouth toilet cover , but I altered it to fit over the seat instead of the lid. Yarn: any worsted weight yarn, about 120 yards (this is a really tight number, I used exactly 118 yards. My suggestion is to make sure you have about 130 yards.) I suggest using acrylic yarn because you’re going to be washing this often. Needle: I used US 8, but you can use whatever needle size is recommended by the yarn you’re using. Gauge: Not that important. Mine was 4 sts/1 inch in garter stitch. 6 buttons (I used some leftover shell buttons I had in my stash) tapestry needle Crochet hook (optional) Cover: Using a provisional cast on, cast on 12 stitches. Work in garter st until liner measures

Tabi socks, part deux

Captain's Log, Stardate 07.25.2008 (If you're on Ravelry, friend me! I'm camytang.) I made tabi socks again! (At the bottom of the pattern is the calculation for the toe split if you're not using the same weight yarn that I did for this pattern (fingering). I also give an example from when I used worsted weight yarn with this pattern.) I used Opal yarn, Petticoat colorway. It’s a finer yarn than my last pair of tabi socks, so I altered the pattern a bit. Okay, so here’s my first foray into giving a knitting pattern. Camy’s top-down Tabi Socks I’m assuming you already know the basics of knitting socks. If you’re a beginner, here are some great tutorials: Socks 101 How to Knit Socks The Sock Knitter’s Companion A video of turning the heel Sock Knitting Tips Yarn: I have used both fingering weight and worsted weight yarn with this pattern. You just change the number of cast on stitches according to your gauge and the circumference of your ankle. Th

Year of the Dog serial novel

About Year of the Dog : A month or two ago, I remembered an old manuscript I had completed but which hadn’t sold. It was a contemporary romance meant for Zondervan, titled Year of the Dog . The book had gone into the pipeline and I even got another title ( Bad Dog ) and a cover for it, but eventually my editor at the time decided she didn’t want to publish it, for various reasons. She instead requested a romantic suspense, and so I cannibalized some of the characters from Year of the Dog and thrust them into the next book I wrote, which was Protection for Hire . Honestly, I didn’t take a lot from Year of the Dog to put in Protection for Hire , aside from character names and a few relationship ties. I was originally thinking I’d post Year of the Dog as-is on my blog as a free read, but then it occurred to me that I could revamp it into a romantic suspense and change the setting to Hawaii. It would work out perfectly as (yet another) prequel to the Warubozu series and introduc

I GOT A CONTRACT!

Captain’s Log, Stardate 03.29.2006 I had a wonderfully funny blog post planned for today, but I got sidetracked by some news yesterday! Zondervan has offered me a three-book contract on my Asian chick-lit series ! I’m still stunned by everything that’s happened. The series is actually a 4-book projected Asian chick-lit series about four cousins who fall under the infamous family title "Oldest Single Female Cousin," and their ruthless, wealthy grandma applies pressure on each of them to improve their lack of love interests. I think the first book is tentatively scheduled to be released in August 2007. The blurb on the series is on my website here . Brandilyn Collins posted to the ACFW loop about my writing journey, and Tamara Cooper asked that I share it. And since you all know how much I like to talk , here it is. My writing journey: Like most writers, I have wanted to write since I was very young. (In high school, I wrote a fantasy novel that will never see the light of day

New book idea a la Captain Caffeine

Captain's Log, Stardate 04.14.2009 So my husband, Captain Caffeine, had lunch with a few friends a few days ago. And they asked about my writing, and if I’d been on Oprah yet. (Yeah, right) They then discussed NYT bestselling books, and why can’t Camy write a NYT bestseller. (Sure, let me just open a vein over a blank page and it’ll come right out.) So Captain Caffeine came home with ideas for my new NYT bestselling novel. First it starts with vampires, because Twilight is so hot. But not just any vampires. This one’s an Amish vampire. And he’s not just an Amish vampire, he’s a cop in disguise, infiltrating the Amish community to protect a witness. (Hmm, that storyline sounds familiar ...) But wait! There’s more! To add more conflict and stick with my brand of Asian fiction, we introduce the Tibetan monk! Who joins the Amish community to get away from the pressures of monkhood. But in reality, he’s protecting the Chinese princess on the run, trying to escape from her father’s Hong
